Recently, we are coming to grips with development of fish habitat evaluation software that called Virtual Habitat Simulation Model (VHS).
Virtual Habitat Simulation Model (VHS) is based on Individual Based Model (IBM). In order to obtain information of dynamical fish school behavior, experiments with Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis were carried out. The behavior of fish school was recorded on video camera in both of static and dynamic water area. Coordinates data of each fish head position was digitized from image that captured from video tape at intervals one second. We defined fish school radius that indicated expanse of fish school. It becomes clear that fluctuations of an expanse of fish school are proportion to fluctuation (1/f) of the power spectrum. This confirms that in the case of Japanese dace a minimum distance between individual fish is equal to about 0.03m.

We developed computer software reappeared fish school behavior that applied individual based model (IBM). This software has visual function for making agreement tool with residents who related river improvement project. We calculated time series data of fish school radius form each fish position data. In verification of individual based model, we compared computational results with experimental results, used power spectrum of fish school radius. These results have confirmed the certain reliability of the model. Complex fish schooling behavior was expressed by simple behavior rules with randomness.
